Background of the Study:
Digital journalism has redefined the dissemination of news by offering real-time updates and interactive reporting. In Owerri North Local Government, Imo State, digital news platforms play a critical role in countering misinformation by providing verified information and fact-checking in a fast-paced media environment (Eze, 2023). With the proliferation of social media and online news outlets, misinformation can spread rapidly, influencing public opinion and undermining trust in traditional news sources. Digital journalism, with its capacity for timely corrections and interactive audience engagement, offers a counterbalance by fostering transparency and accountability (Okoro, 2024). Moreover, the integration of multimedia content and data-driven reporting enhances the credibility and accessibility of news, empowering citizens to make informed decisions (Nwosu, 2023). Despite these advances, challenges such as cyber attacks, algorithmic biases, and the economic sustainability of digital news platforms persist. This study investigates how digital journalism can effectively combat misinformation, focusing on the specific context of Owerri North Local Government, and examines the mechanisms that contribute to improved public awareness and trust in the media.

Although digital journalism has the potential to combat misinformation, Owerri North Local Government faces challenges related to fake news, limited resources for fact-checking, and algorithmic distortions that may compromise news accuracy. The gap between the promise of digital journalism and the prevalence of misinformation necessitates a thorough investigation into the strategies employed by digital news outlets (Eze, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the role of digital journalism in combating misinformation in Owerri North Local Government.
To identify the challenges digital journalists face in verifying information.
To recommend strategies for enhancing the credibility of digital news platforms.

Significance of the Study:
The study will inform digital media practitioners and regulators on best practices to counter misinformation, thereby enhancing public trust and accountability in Owerri North Local Government (Umeh, 2024).
